Shinigami Template

Basics

Name: Sumiko Yamamoto (山本澄子 Yamamoto Sumiko: )
True Age: 174
Gender: Female
Personality: If there were Olympics for determination, Sumiko would try to bring home all Golds. As the daughter of the famed Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Sumiko had "Do your best" drilled into her like an American oil drill in the Middle East. When training for her Shikai, she'd spend days awake just trying to talk to her Zanpakutō. Rumor has it she ran screaming "I DID IT" to her Captain while he was in the bath when she finally did learn her Zanpakutō's name. She's the type that says "Even if you kill me ten times, I won't be killed." She's called a living sugar rush, because everything she does she does as soon as it pops into her mind (because she says she'd forget it otherwise). She also has a taste in sweets that can be described as "Isn't this just a blob of sugar?" However, don't think that she has moments where she's just tired all of a sudden. That's the strange thing about her—she doesn't really have that natural kill-switch most sugar rushes come with.  But back to her determination, even if she gets rejected once, she comes back for more and more. Because of the ideas of her time, she wants to marry someone powerful—like her father. As of yet... she hasn't found someone she's taken that much of a liking to.

Sumiko also has a temper comparable to a grenade. It just takes one little pull at the wrong string of hers and bam. She's noted to get extremely mad and scary for just a brief amount of time—just enough to make her subordinates shit themselves in fear. But while it doesn't last long, it's still something to avoid. She'd stand up to other Captains who outweigh her (and out-do her in skill overall) like she was the bigger one of the two. The fact she does that while being of such a small stature makes her a true internal affairs master. She does, however, have an extreme fear of spiders and would go as far as to release her Bankai to kill a spider... if she didn't have the option of asking her Lieutenant to do so.

General Appearance

Appearance:
Yamamoto Sumiko [Approved, 1-1+] Appearance4
Appearance Age: Late-teens, early-20s
Height: 163 cm
Weight: 49 kg

Natural  Abilities

Unreleased Abilities:
Kidō: Kidō was Sumiko's best subject in the Academy. However, she's really not much above average for Kidō for even Lieutenants. She mixes up spells constantly, but she is always eager to try to learn new ones.
Zanjutsu: As Sumiko loses her sword entirely in Shikai and Bankai, Sumiko gradually forgot her teachings in Zanjutsu. Coupled with the fact that she has two swords when unreleased made it even harder to use traditional Zanjutsu.
Hakuda: Hakuda is something Sumiko never liked, but she did have a semi-gift for it if only because of her stamina. She never would rely on it for any lengthy period of time.
Hohou: Sumiko's worst skill is her Shunpo. She can barely use it to any effect. However, she's just fine with this because her Bankai and Shikai both are artillery-types, which makes moving just a pain.
Stamina: The most unique part of Sumiko's natural talent is her unique stamina. She just doesn't stop. She may hurt like hell, but she always has the energy to keep going. She tires out about 1/4 the rate of an average Shinigami, allowing her to have much more training that matters than most others. This is how she gained her Shikai and Bankai at such an abnormally young age.
Zanpakutō: Strangely enough, Sumiko has two swords for her sealed Zanpakutō. The strange part is that she carries them both on her left side, even though they are the same length. When using Shikai, she puts the two swords together at the end cap.
Yamamoto Sumiko [Approved, 1-1+] Sealed
Zanpakutō Release Phrase: Yōsorō (ヨーソロー; Steady as She Goes)
Other Weapons: None

Zanpakutō Spirit

Zanpakutō Spirit Name: Shiranui
Zanpakutō Spirit Appearance:
Yamamoto Sumiko [Approved, 1-1+] ZanSpirit
Zanpakutō Spirit Personality: Shiranui normally just sits back and lets Sumiko do her own thing. She knows that her owner will do the right thing eventually, so why bother trying to teach her? Shiranui isn't lazy, but rather... she wants Sumiko to fall down some times. She wants her owner to fail so Sumiko can learn from those mistakes.
Zanpakutō Spirit's World: Shiranui's world is an endless ocean. The water can be stood upon, and you can only sink beneath it if you have taken too much damage. There are no clouds in the sky and time of day correlates to the time outside. There is no land and the seas and skies are just as bottomless as the ocean's width. There are no birds, nor are there any sea life. It is desolate, like a graveyard.
Spoiler:

Shikai

Shikai: Shiranui (不知火; unknown fire: )
Shikai Appearance:
 photo Appearance3.png
Shikai Abilities: Unless otherwise stated, all of her abilities are used via her bow. She also has to call out the name of her attacks to switch. To put Sumiko's reishi into perspective, let's say she has 1,000 "units" in Shikai. This does not equal tier, but does show how much she can use her abilities with. These "units" can be compared to ammunition moreso than reishi. This could tie into her abilities' theme...
Minekaze (峯風; "Summit Wind"): When the tip of an arrow of hers makes contact with something with Minekaze active, there is a small explosion, comparable to a light grenade. Considering the improvements of her later abilities, there is no post limitation to these; although the more she uses them, the less energy she has. Minekaze takes 10 units to use per explosion.
Kamikaze (神風; "God Wind”): When the arrowhead makes contact with Kamikaze active, there are multiple smaller explosion. These can be compared to fireworks. They can't really be fatal as a one-shot, but they can be fatal after a sustained barrage. As with Minekaze, there is no post limit, but the more she uses Kamikaze, the less energy she has. Kamikaze takes 5 units to use per explosion.
Mutsuki (睦月; ”January”): When Mutsuki is active, Sumiko can send a "torpedo" of explosive power in the shape of a large arrow. The explosive power can be compared to Minekaze's power, although it has range on its side. They go for about 50 meters before exploding in place. She can send out three "torpedoes" at a time. Each torpedo uses 10 units.
Fubuki (吹雪; "Blizzard"): When Fubuki is active, Sumiko can send smaller, yet faster, "torpedoes" like from Mutsuki. They do not have the same explosive ability, but they are approximately 1.5× faster than the Mutsuki's. They go for about 40 meters before exploding in place. She can send six at a time, although each one uses 20 units. She can only do Fubuki once per post.
Hatsuharu (初春; ”Early Spring”): When Hatsuharu is active, Sumiko's strength is shifted and she becomes extremely top-heavy. This allows her to pull the bowstring back farther and faster, giving her greater range and firing rate for a post. This uses 15 units, but she can only do it once per two posts and it lasts for only one post. The main downside to this is that she is incredibly unbalanced and strong gusts of wind or shockwaves can knock her down.
Shiratsuyu (白露; ”White Dew”): Shiratsuyu increases Sumiko's jumping ability. With it active, she can jump to a height of 60 meters without using Houhou for a single post. However, this doesn't increase her landing durability to match, meaning she has to find some way to break her fall. She can use it twice per post, but each use uses a whopping 50 units.
Asashio (朝潮; "Morning Tide"): Asashio is much like Fubuki, in that it sends fast torpedoes. However, it can only send four at a time and the explosions are larger than a Minekaze's explosion. They go for about 30 meters before exploding in place. She can only use it once per post and each torpedo uses 40 units.
Kagerō (陽炎; Mirage): Kagerō is another torpedo-class ability. While these have a Fubuki's explosive power, their main devestating factor is the range. A Kagerō can go for 100 meters before exploding, making it a fearsome ranged attack. She can only use it once per post, and can only send out 4 at a time. Each one costs a massive 75 unit though.
Yūgumo (夕雲; "Evening Clouds"): Yūgumo is an improvement over Shiratsuyu, giving her jumping ability a 120-meter increase for a single post. However, this also compensates for the fall. This makes it a good ability, although she can't use it very often due to its whopping 200 unit cost. It can be used once per post with a two-post recharge.
Akizuki (秋月;“Autumn Moon”): Akizuki is the only improvement over the old Kamikaze. When it makes contact, 24 Minekaze-sized explosions occur on the area of contact. However, this costs 400 units so it can not be used lightly. This, coupled with its once per post with a two-recharge post limitation makes it something Sumiko rarely uses.
Shimakaze (島風; "Island Wind"): Shimakaze gives Sumiko a 2-post speed increase by 50%. This is only speed, not mobility or agility. It's sheer speed. She can only use it once per release and it has a 500 unit cost.
Matsu (松; "Pine tree"): Matsu is the final ability of her Shikai, but it can't be said to the most powerful. When used, she can "lay" explosives to act like mines by firing arrows up to 10 meters away. They appear to be steel oil drums, but they have a dim, yellow glow. Contact with these means an explosion the size of two Minekazes. Matsu is, however, the most numerous ability—with Sumiko being able to release 48 of these. Each one costs 20 units, meaning she has nearly used up her Shikai if she does a full-release of them.

Bankai

Bankai: Kaguin no Seishin (海軍の精神; Spirit of the Navy:  )
Bankai Appearance:
Yamamoto Sumiko [Approved, 1-1+] Bankai
Spoiler:
Bankai Abilities: In her Bankai, Sumiko has 2,000 units compared to her Shikai's 1,000. Also like in her Shikai, Sumiko must call out the names of her attacks to use them.
Tenryū (天龍; named after the Tenryū  river): This can be called her Bankai's version of Minekaze. Tenryū , however, does not use a sword. Instead, she uses her umbrella to conduct attacks. Tenryū  has an explosion twice the size of a Minekaze, although she can only do 4 per post. Each explosion costs 20 units.
Kuma (球磨; named after the Kuma river): The Kuma is an upgraded Tenryū , gaining 7 blasts per post. Each one costs 40 units and there is a one-post recharge between uses.
Nagara (長良; named after the Nagara river): Nagara is her Bankai's version of Matsu. When used, she can "lay" explosives to act like mines. They appear to be naval mines, but they have a dim, yellow glow. Contact with these means an explosion the size of three Minekazes. Sumiko is able to release 48 of these. Each one costs 20 units.
Yūbari (夕張; named after the Yūbari river): When Yūbari is active, Sumiko's weight is shifted and she becomes extremely top-heavy. When her blade strikes, she puts down much more weight into her strikes. This uses 15 units, but she can only do it once per post. The main downside to this is that she is incredibly unbalanced and strong gusts of wind or shockwaves can knock her down.
Sendai (川内; named after the Sendai river): Sendai is her Bankai's version of Mutsuki. When Sendai is active, Sumiko can send a "torpedo" of explosive power in the direction she points her umbrella. The explosive power can be compared to Minekaze's power, although it has range on its side. They go for about 60 meters before exploding in place. She can send out four "torpedoes" at a time. Each torpedo uses 20 units.
Katori (香取; named after the Shinto Katori Shrine): Katori increases the size and durability of her umbrella, creating a shield. Each post it is used in costs 30 units, but each strike to it costs 5. It can not stand up to mid-level Kidō.
Agano (阿賀野; named after the Agano River): Agano is first Bankai-version of the Akizuki. When the umbrella makes contact, 32 Minekaze-sized explosions occur on the area of contact. However, this costs 400 units so it can not be used lightly. This, coupled with its once per post with a two-recharge post limitation makes it something Sumiko rarely uses.
Ōyodo (大淀; named after the Ōyodo River): Ōyodo creates large explosions when the tip of the umbrella makes contact. These are larger than even the old Minekaze, and are comparable to a Mutsuki-sized explosion. Each explosion costs 100 units and she can only use 6 per post.
Furutaka (古鷹; named for Mount Furutaka): An improvement over Sendai, Furutaka also sends out torpedoes. However, these are the power of four Minekaze-class explosions with the same range as a Sendai (60m). Each one costs 200 units to fire and she can only fire 4 at a time. There is a two-post recharge between uses.
Aoba (青葉; named for Mount Aoba): Aoba is interesting, as it does not use the tip of the umbrella for its attacks. Instead, it uses the edges. This creates an "explosive sawblade" effect, as the explosions are the size of a Kamikaze. She can use it once per two posts with a cost of 100 units.
Myōkō (妙高; named for Mount Myōkō): Myōkō creates large explosions when the tip of the umbrella makes contact. These are larger than even the old Minekaze, and are comparable to one-and-a-half Mutsuki-sized explosion. Each explosion costs 200 units and she can only use 10 per post with a one-post recharge period.
Takao (高雄; named for Mount Takao): An improvement over Furutaka, Takao also sends out torpedoes. However, these are the power of three Minekaze-class explosions with a 200-meter range. Each one costs 200 units to fire, but she can fire 8 at a time. There is a two-post recharge between uses.
Mogami (最上; named for the Mogami River): Mogami increases Sumiko's speed to 2× her normal speed. This is, again, only full-on speed. She can keep this up for two posts, but each post uses 200 units. She also can only use it once per release.
Tone (利根; named for the Tone River): A charge attack, Tone puts 6 Minekaze-sized explosions in the tip of the umbrella. The umbrella then expands, creating a blast shield. However, this also prevents Sumiko from seeing, making it a blind charge. When it makes contact, the explosion is fired. This pushes Sumiko back approximately 10 meters. She can do this once per release with a 750 unit cost.
Kongō (金剛; "indestructible": Kongō moves the massive battleship-shaped armored pieces in front of her, creating a massive shield that can withstand high-level Kidō. She can keep it up for two posts, with each post costing 500 units. Low-level (1-33) Kidō strikes cost 10, mid-level (34-66) cost 20, and high-level (66+) cost 50 a piece. She can do this once per release.
Fusō (扶桑; a classical name for Japan): Fusō is the first ability to use the massive cannons on her back. It fires all six of the minor guns on the right side where ever she points her umbrella to. The six smaller guns have the power of a Minekaze each. This has a twice-per-release usage with a cost of 500 units. It can be used once per three posts.
Ise (伊勢; named for the Ise Province): Ise is the only true physical ability of her Bankai. Around both of her legs are shells—three on each. These can be thrown at high speeds (approximately 90mph) and explode on contact. These are tradional explosives and have reishi-infused gunpowder. The shells can be deflected and don't have much penetration power. Each has the explosive power of two hand grenades. It does not cost any units to use, as there is no energy expended. However, she only has six shells.
Nagato (長門; named for Nagato Province): Nagato allows her to fire her anchors off, creating a nice way for her to catch herself. It costs 200 units, but it can be used multiple times per thread.
Shinano (信濃; named after the ancient Japanese Shinano Province): Shinano fires the gun on her back. It can only fire below, behind (to certain angles), to the sides, and above Sumiko. However, it's semi-blind fighting. She has a general idea of where an enemy is thanks to the radar headgear she has, but it's still not as accurate as firing her forward guns. Each shell costs 200 units a piece and each one has the explosive power of a 200lb bomb. She can only fire six shells per release.
Musashi (武蔵; named after the ancient Japanese Musashi Province): Musashi fires the two main forward guns. By aiming where where umbrella points, she can unleash the power of 12 200lb bombs on her target. Each shell costs 200 units. She can only fire 10 shells per release, but if her energy was recharged she could fire 12. This is a once-per-release ability.
Yamato (大和; named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province): The strongest ability. It requires a massive 1,200 units to use. She latches herself down with the anchors to prevent her from being thrown by the back-blast (though this is optional). She then aims at a target with her umbrella. Once the target is in sight, she lets hell loose by firing all of her forward guns. The massive main guns on her back provide a covering explosion of nearly 10 Minekaze-size each. There is a once per release policy on this, and she can not re-release after use.

Past & Roleplay Sample

Character Background: May 1925. Isoroku Yamamoto, a Captain in the Imperial Japanese Navy, had a daughter born to him by his wife, Reiko Mihashi. Her name was Sumiko. However, her father was not there for long. He left soon after to return to the U.S. Naval War College, as part of the Japanese delegation. Sumiko was told about her father and how much he loved her. As she grew older, this grew into an intense love only a daughter could have for her father. She revered and feared him. When he was recieving death threats for apologizing for the bombing of the USS Panay, Sumiko would stand watch over his office with a broom. When he wrote a letter saying:

"To die for Emperor and Nation is the highest hope of a military man. After a brave hard fight the blossoms are scattered on the fighting field. But if a person wants to take a life instead, still the fighting man will go to eternity for Emperor and country. One man's life or death is a matter of no importance. All that matters is the Empire. As Confucius said, 'They may crush cinnabar, yet they do not take away its color; one may burn a fragrant herb, yet it will not destroy the scent.' They may destroy my body, yet they will not take away my will."

Sumiko found it to be the most profound thing she had ever seen. Soon after, war were declared.
Isoroku once again had to leave for the capital, leaving his daughters and wife behind. Sumiko, as a female, could not join the military. Instead, she attended a private high school outside of Tokyo and would do whatever she could to support her family. When Isoroku was promoted to the supreme commander of all naval affairs, Sumiko was almost a celebrity. However, she only wanted people to support the war effort. In 1943, Isoroku's plane was shot down. There were no survivors. The hero of her childhood, her father, dead, Sumiko was shaken. However, she still graduated at the top of her class. Her brothers were both deployed away from home, so Sumiko had to take in a lot of responsibility.
In March 1945, Sumiko would die. Her family fled Tokyo in the middle of a fierce firebombing. By the time they reached the outskirts of the city, Sumiko (the driver of the truck they owned) was lost. Asking a stranger for directions, they sped towards the mountains. Sumiko heard a familiar sound—a sharp whistling. She slammed on the brakes, which threw her mother off... only seconds before a 400lb firebomb hit the hood of the truck. While Reiko survived, Sumiko and her sister died instantly.  Sumiko last remembers seeing a man in black clothes saying "Not another one... I hope this war ends soon. My job isn't supposed to be this stressful."
Sumiko awoke in a place similar to her hometown... a few hundred years before she was born. Once she learned that she had died... well, it was a shock. However, she also learned that females were accepted into the police/military here. Upon hearing that, she went to sign up. She was turned away a total of fifteen times before they finally let her in so she'd stop bothering the officials in charge of admission. While in the academy, she was a failure for her first two years. She was to be cut her third year, but... she paid off. Say that the rate of progress for an average Shinigami is a sharp curve that levels off. Sumiko is a constant line.  While it may not show progress too well initially—her rate of progress does not change. This puts her advantage later on. And it showed. Within a year, she went from bottom of the barrel to the top 10 of her class. When she graduated, she was assigned to the 10th Division as she didn't have too good of skills overall.

When other members of her class began learning their Zanpakutō names, Sumiko started to try as well. Someone of comparable class would take about... 50 years to learn and essentially master Shikai. It took Sumiko 25. If it rained, Sumiko talked to her Zanpakutō and trained. If it snowed, Sumiko talked to her Zanpakutō and trained. If she was running a 102-degree fever, Sumiko talked to her Zanpakutō and trained. It took people to actually restrain her to keep her from training. Within the next 70 years, Sumiko also attained her Bankai. This came as a shock to her and other members of the Gotei. However, she wasn't a prodigy. She wasn't someone who had Reishi that rivalled the Captain-Commander. No, she just worked for it all. No matter what happened, Sumiko was working for her keep. And it paid off when she became Captain of the 7th Division.
